The all-solid Kentucky KM 170 series (black, purple or natural) is my favorite for folk, jazz and classical. It actually plays well and sounds good (the only one at that price point that does, IMO). Their professional mandolins are expensive compared to Loar and, currently, none are in stock at SAGA.ДЇor that matter, the most popular Loars are in very short supply - hence my recommendation to buy ASAP if you want one by Christmas. >Kentucky makes decent quality beginner mandolins.< They look cool - especially if you play bluegrass. If you don't need the fancy trim - or have Spartan tastes - or can't spend over $500 (I can do case and shipping in the lower 48 under 5 bills), the 520 is your mandolin. The LM-520 is the plain version of the 600. The LM-500 has a scoop on the fretboard extension, the #1 modification most players make as it's considered the 'sweet spot' for many players and a scoop gets it out of the way of the pick. Which one I would recommend for any player depends on many factors but, if you wannaВ be like Bill MonnroeВ under a grand, the LM-600 is the one to get.
